Meet Adebayo Sinmi-Adetona, a well-dressed, well-groomed and well-spoken male image consultant and the owner of Persona. Whether you’re a man looking to better his appearance or someone aspiring to become a men’s style consultant, you’ll benefit from reading Adebayo’s image advice and style tips for men.
Our society has created a false culture where physical image is thought of as more of a feminine concern instead of one that affects both sexes. As an image consultant, I help men see the importance of a good image, how it can be used as a tool for success and help them become what they want to be perceived as.
I believe men can elevate their images and achieve so much more in every area of their lives. On that note, these are five things I wish every man knew:
1. You will always be judged by your “cover”
I’m sure you are familiar with the popular admonishment: “Do not judge a book by its cover”. We are told not to judge based on what we see, but our brain (specifically a part of our brain called the amygdala) is wired to do the exact opposite. We see a person for the first time and our brain subconsciously sorts the person into a prefabricated category based on the individual’s physical appearance. So too people judge you first and foremost by how you look. It doesn’t matter that you are a gentleman or that you are hardworking, reliable or knowledgeable. All that matters are what your image is projecting and how people perceive you based on your image when they first meet you. And first impressions are really powerful memories to change.
2. Dressing well is a skill
Like every skill, dressing well can be learned. Be ready to make little changes over time and soon you’ll be the one people look up to for style inspiration. I understand you are fond of what you’ve always worn, but to improve you need to get out of your comfort zone and try out new things – especially those things you’ve always wanted to try. Wear that hat, try on the bright coloured shirt, use that accessory you bought two years ago and just kept in your closet.
3. Know thy self
Don’t be boxed into the ‘small, medium, large’ label for size. A gentleman should know his body and understand what flatters him. In addition, know the right measurements that work for your body. This will help when buying clothes or tailoring a piece. Always remember: Fit is king. An outfit that fits you properly automatically elevates your look no matter how simple the attire is and regardless of your body type. Ignore what the media has dubbed the “perfect body” – you don’t have to be like Magic Mike to look good.
4. Grooming is essential
Grooming is definitely undervalued by men. It’s amazing how a simple haircut can transform a savage look to that of a gentleman. A gentleman should ensure he takes care of his body. Create a simple but effective grooming regime. Some elements can be done weekly, others on a daily basis. For example, you could trim your hair and nails neatly every week depending on how fast they grow. Moisturise your body, put some hair cream on and pass a comb or brush through your hair each time you take a bath. It’s the little things that count.
5. Don’t be embarrassed
If you need help concerning your image or style, don’t be embarrassed to seek help from experts. He who asks for directions (from the right source) never gets lost. Showing concern about your image or your style does not make you any less of a man, neither does asking. A gent is no less of a gentleman for wanting to elevate the way he presents himself.
Your image is a tool to compete in life, gain leverage, command respect, attract opportunities and even increase your income. People always react well to a person they like the look of. Invest in your image, look like the person you would like to associate with.
